Default buying an 87 300 turbo diesel

I just saw and drove a mint 1987 300 turbo diesel with only 38,000 miles on it. The car is all there and tight. I wanted to know if when the transmission shifts, has a little jerk is normal? Also I cannot tell if the trap oxidizer has been changed and if there is a problem with an aluminum head. I will say that the guy let me open it up and it was strong. I would appreciate any advise before i put down a deposit.

Thank you
Albert

Thank you gor your reply. I can see that the 87 would've been problematic as it was going to be a daily driver.
