Default battery blew up

ok i changed my oil as always. didnt bang into anything that i know of and when i was finished i pulled the car back and parked it. the next day i come out to take off and went about a half hour drive while chocking on (what i found out later ) was fumes from mt battery boiling over. well after a sit over night i headed back home and by the tiem oi got to the housei could not breath in my car (wich is a 94 E-420) i popped the trunk and the top had blown off and got crap all over in my trunk. i tried replacing the battery and it started to boil as well so i checked the voltage and it was up to just under 20 volts. also the abs light has been comming on since this problem. does every one think it is the voltage regulater? can this be changed out by me or is inside the altenater and i should just buy a new one?? i am a colleg student so low on funds i am really hoping for some help here and a point in the least expensive path. there are no junk yards here that woudl have mercedes parts. thanks guys (gals if any)

Default RE: battery blew up

you can consider doing it by steps.

first the voltage regulator which is easier to fix and cheaper.

then check the voltage again.

if still high... replace the alternator.
