What is old?I have a 88 735i and a 99 e320 wagon if they are considered old,the mercedes is by far the more reliable, easier to work on,cheaper parts, and all around a better car.Even new the BMW was a problem and the mercedes has never been anything but a pleasure to drive.

I own a 98 E320 and its trouble free since new and a pleasure to drive. Parts, as ohlord said, are not so expensive. 1990s MB´s standards were higher than BMW´s... classy and reliable cars, not like the junks they manufactured in the last years. Find a good MB and enjoy driving a really good car.

thanks for the input...my first MB...many BMW's and stuff...i think the MB body stuff is better but have wondered why my 88 BMW has motronics, which is excellent, and the 90 MB is still fooling around with KE-5CIS junk still...just what i've seen personally and i could be offbase on this one

My 1998 E320 is not old yet, but it has some miles on it. It's rock solid, has ice cold A/C, quick of the line, quiet and still reeks of leather and wood as only a nice Benz interior can. Sure it has had a few issues, mostly minor and cosmetic but nothing that some quick work on the weekends couldn't solve.
My 1982 240D is a new purchase to me. I love this thing. The engine is by far the most intriguing thing that I have ever worked with. It has over 314K on the clock and I would love to see a Honda or Toyota run as well as this car with the same miles. I love old Benzes but am unable to speak much about BMWs. From what I have heard, they can be wonderful cars if they are properly maintained. I have been told that the 3 series is a great car if the PM has been followed to a T. I have also heard that 80's BMWs were not that reliable and are to be avoided.
Good luck. Love my cars and smile when it's time to "work on them". They are very well engineered automobiles.[8D]
