Default 97 E420 leaks refrigerant

Hi everybody,
I filled up regfrigerant 1.5 years ago. Now, the mechanic found out there is a hole in a/c system. He is asking for us$ 1,500 to fixed it.
My a/c is still cold but not as cold as Japanese cars. I feel that it is too expensive to fixed.
Can somebody tell me how to check if there is enough refrigerant inside.
Should I ask the air conditioner specialist in my area (L.A.) if there is any option?

The mechanics did not know where it leaks. I am not sure if they change the whole system

If your A/C still give some cool air it means that the compressor is still working. The mechanic should load some fluorescent dyes in the sytem and trace the source of the leak and give you the detailied list of the proposed repair. The A/C of my 88' 300TE just have a big leak today and I though that will be big $$ for repair. It turms out that it just a corroded valve fitting... just an $50.oo job...

good luck
