Default 1996 E320 Rear window regulator replacement advice needed

Hello,

I'll give a little background what I have done so far...

My girlfriends mothers E320 right rear window was stuck about 3 inches from the top. We couldn't get the window to move up or down so I was suspecting a switch problem. After I pulled the door panel off and did some checks, I found that the switch and the motor are just fine. But when I pulled the motor off to check it, I noticed that the cable that is on the regulator was off the spool and around the drive of the motor. It looks like that one of the swedges is off the cable and the "slider" *the part of the regulator that both cables connect to which moves in the track* was broken and the white plastic piece was broken.

Obviously I am going to have to replace the whole regulator since that piece is broken. I have searched the net for an exact way of replaceing the regulator and have found nothing so far. But from what I can guess, it looks to me like I'm going to have to grind off the rivots of the old regulator, and rivot the new one in.

SO... *I know...long winded... lol* I'm just wondering if that is pretty much the line of attack that I'm going to have to take for this or is there an easier way to do it. And if there isn't an easier way of replacing it then maybe some advice on a good way of going about this. I have everything off right now BUT the old regulator. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

You are on the right track. I have done this once and it is relatively easy. I drilled the old rivet instead of grinding it out. The rivet is aluminum and soft. So you can drill it out. Please let me know if you want to know where I ordered the part on-line.

You may also need some advice on if it is a good idea to fix your girlfriend's mom's car. This smells like the begining of a mother-in-law son-in-law relationship, if that's the track you want to be on.

I just did this on my 1999 E320. I followed the excellent how-to (with photos) found here:

which is from the Benzworld forums.

Thanks for the help with this. It really was a lot easier then I thought that it was going to be. That link that you posted was a good help. Thank you all again for the help.
