check engine light has been on,was told wiring harness needs replacing, transmission kickes down, stays in 1st or 2nd gear,is this due to the wiring harness too?I was told electronic speed control or accelerator control may be effected by faulty wiring harness, was wondering if the transmission problem is due to the wiring harness too.
Has anyone exprienced this?or can anyone shed some light on this? All helps and replies is greatly appreciated.

If your car has ASR, or traction control, a faulty wiring harness [BTW they are NOT cheap] can cause the car going into "limp home mode" with symptoms similar to those you describe. Your transmission is not electronically controlled, but a misadjustment of the control cable actuated by the throttle linkage [you can see the coupling on the firewall] can also cause problems]. If you are unsure, have the car looked at by a good independent mechanic/tech. The dealer is not really interested in working on a car of your vintage, and most of the younger techs will not be familiar with the car's systems.
Good luck,
