1990 W124 230E shift issues
Hi,
So My dad's w124 230E with auto transmission is suffering from a unique behavior and it is annoying.
When start up the car (doesnt matter if it is hot or cold) the rpm would stay at ~1100 for like 40 seconds before coming down to ~700 at idle. during that time if i drive the car, the car will get stuck in 2nd gear for like a minute unless I rev it up to above ~3000 rpm then it will shift fine. however if i wait like 40 secs before putting it into gear and driving it, it'll shift normally.
(this behavior started to appear 1.5 years ago, first it was happening couple times a week, few months later on, it became permanent)
the second thing and i don't know if it is related or not. the transmission upshifts to 4th right away after going into 3rd under light to medium throttle at around 40km and would make a clunk noise(that can be felt). i have to babysit it by holding down the throttle(~2500 rpm) and release my foot fast for a smooth gear change or manually shift it from 3 to D.
also i noticed sometimes it doesnt downshift and stays in 4th until i come to full stop(this is getting more frequent with time).
Any ideas what to do? the local mechanics where i live dont seem to understand the issue.
I flushed and replaced the tranny fluid+new filter but that didnt help. in short, the shift points are totally messed up.
