190e No Start But Wants To!
Hello Fellow 190e Enthusiasts,
Currently I have a very, very frustrating situation with my '88 Mercedez 190e 2.6. It cranks, coughs but it just won't start. A few times that it did, it went out in less than a minute on its own free running. I have taken to 2 mechanics so far. Sad (but fair) to say, they are either rip-off minded or just plain incompetent. Well, actually "inexperienced" was more of the second dude, who told me he was good at mechanical, rather than electrical, aspect of auto mechanics. At least he was honest.
The long and the short is, initially the ignition coil was identified to be the issue due to no spark. But after that was changed, along with a long list of other components indicated as follows, right now it is still sitting in my garage not wanting to start.
1) ECU
2) ICU
3) OVP
4) O2 Sensor
5) H2O Sensor
6) CPS
7) FPR* (Fuel Pump Relay)
8) Ignition Coil
9) Ignition Module
10) Ignition Starter Module (not ignition switch)
11) Cap
12) Rotor
13) Plugs
14) Wires okay (no unpermitted sparks)
15) Airflow Actuator
16) Fuel Pump okay (ascertained by second mechanic)
17) Fuel Injector ("spider" in Mercedez jargon) - DON'T KNOW
18) Individual Injectors - DON'T KNOW
19) Battery brand new, 700 CCA, car needs only 550.
20) No systemic leaks (ascertained by second mechanic)
21) *Fuel Pressure Actuator/Regulator, another FPR - DON'T KNOW
22) Strong working alternator (ALWAYS recharged battery immediately prior to current state)
So at this point I really don't know what else to look for. Right now when I turn on the ignition, there is always this first crank giving a false hope as if it would just start up, and then it just withers, thereafter it was to be followed by cranks, cranks and more cranks but just no fireworks! Occasionally it would cough one here or there. And if I am really lucky, and step on the gas pedal furiously, it may allow me a momentary gratification by firing up at last. Momentary because, less than a minute or so on its own running it then would just go out, as if someone had flipped off the switch just like that.
It began a few months ago with some hesitation (but no problem climbing hills), some occasional second starts, and *graduated with stop-and-go, i.e., long red light, stallings. Now that it has entered its *post-graduate status following stalling, it just won't even start!
Help! Any comments, opins greatly appreciated. I just don't know what else to do any more. The other I loosened up the screws for the FPR at back of spider, and the fuel just shot out. But when I dislodged individual injectors again from the spider, one even from the block, to my surprise none of them was moist.
4 things about a car starting up, as many would say and I agree:
*Ignition
*Fuel
*Timing (meaning internal parts are firing up properly, working right)
*No Leaks
But if I may put it this way.
Car starts up = Ignition + Fuel + Their simultaneous occurrence.
Help!
