Default 03 E500 can system down

Hi guys, I’ve had my 03 e500 for about three weeks. I love my car however I have run into some issues. The can system has gone down. A little backstory. I bought the car for pretty cheap with only 141k miles from a friend who complained that the battery would die if it was not driving every few days. So in turn she un hooked most electronics in the car. She had an after marker radio with after market amp installed. I’m guessing when they un hooked the hot wire going from amp to small wire on battery terminal in trunk. Well apparently that small wire was left loose and shorted out. I tried to start the car and it died instead of starting so I checked the cables first as it seemed like a battery issue. I seen the loose cable tightened it down and started my car. After I started it I had check engine light and srs light. My passenger seat stopped working and my cruise only worked bellow 55 mph but has changed to 60 mph the last couple days. Also the fans are running on max under the hood non stop and I can’t check my oil level anymore. All these things worked before the short. I took it to a local retired Mercedes mechanic and he said he could not scan code at all due to my can system being down. He said it could be from $100 to $3000 to fix. Does anyone have any ideas where I can start on maybe fixing this myself. I have found a 2003 in my local junkyard I can pull from for parts.
