my wifes 01 E320 this morning went into some type of lockdown. The car will start after some coaxing but it won't shift out of park. the check engine light is on, the ABS light and a few others. also the back-up lights are on. the diagnostic panel states something about it not working.

any clues??

the diagnostic display states 'display defective' , visit workshop.

check engine, brake, ABS & another light is on.

 

I stuck a pen through the little flap & got it to go into drive. the check engine light is stillon. Is this a neutral safety switch or something like that?

In your manual under what to do if stuck in park it tells you the pen trick.Has the car been started?can you start it?where are you located?You need to get the cel codes and post them,it could be several things.
If the battery falls below a set voltage it will trigger those lights abs etc. and be hard to start,I would start by charging the battery overnight and see if that helps.

yes the car has been started. I'm in florida. the wife left the back window open last nite & it rained....I know.

Next thing is..how do I get a CEL code?

will it give me codes through the display paneL?

 

I just drove it. I'm down to the check engine light, SRS light, the display saying no malfunctions and it won't shift out of 1st gear. We are making progress. I'll charge the battery in the morning and give it a go. I'll give you an update after that.

s if the console around the shifter got wet it can play havok with the transmission module.
diy cleaning on benzworld.org w210 diy section or pm me in the am and I will tell you some other things to try.

since I've driven the car, does the module need to be replaced or can it be cleaned & reused??

 

and if I need to replace it, wheres the best place to purchase?
