Default rear headrests

I have a 2000 clk 430 convertible. When I got it, the rear headrests were fully extended. The button on the dash will not lower them, although you can here a relay or something clicking. My MB store doesn't know how to lower them. Probably due to the fact that I didn't purchase it there. They said that the previous owner must have hit a bump or something that sent them into the roll bar mode. I know that there must be an override, but I cannot figure it out. I removed the rear seat and found that they are one piece. The result is that I cannot get the convertible top to work until I get the rear headrests down. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

there is a release switch beside the left headrest there is a tool in your trunk for it, or supposed to be. slide a long thin screw driver down beside the headrest at the stiching on the leather on the headrest, you might have to look down inside to see the lever, its kind of hard to hit. its also very tough pushing the headrests down, recommend 2 people.

That is for the individual headrests. My headreats are made together as one large mechanism. We tried that, but there is a rubber wheel to the outside of each headrest preventing that operation.

i assume your talking about the back seat headrest that pops up in a roll over right? it will keep your roof from operating if it is not down. the dealer i work at will put them down for free. maybe try the dealer. there is a problem with the valve on the rollover bar/headrest that does go bad it is a big job the whole roll bar must come out. you should be able to lower the roll bar/headrest, not sure what you mean about a wheel though.

Yes. I am referring to the rear headrests. The rubber wheels are on the outside of the bar that the headrests are made to. They evidently allow the entire assy to move up and down smoothly. I have been to my dealer and they do not know how to lower them. I was hoping that someone out there has had a similar problem, and could give me some insight on these headrests.

2003 CLK 430 with the roll bar headrests fully extended. I believe that I got it out of sequence somehow. Well I have the same issue the others in this thread, but looking at the post dates I do not think I will get much help either. I have an appointment for the service department on Tuesday (13nov2007) so I will post the results anyhow.

I have all the service schematics from mercedes and I cannot fiure it out. The latches move out of the way and the cylinder tries top pull the head rests down, but something is preventing motion.
