2006 CLK 500 / red battery light to workshop
Hello,
I will need some guidance with my vehicle.
Just one day after I picked my vehicle from replacing the radiator , hoses and thermostat, came up a red battery light on the dashboard. I never got this message before.
Of course, I am mad because I just finished to get fixed a major repair and now this only situation just walking out the garage.
I called the mechanic to described what happened and he said that could the the alternator. I just replaced one a year ago, also I replaced the battery about 4 years ago.
When I arrived home the car was running as usual, I parked and I could not started but the lights came on. I couple of hours later, I tried and the car started as usual.
Why the mechanic just said is the alternator instead of telling me that we will see what code comes up first.
Also I asked him if disconnected the battery or any electrical connection that we be in false connection and his answer was no.
What is the best course of action?
Thank you in advance,
Wolfang

Sorry, but I not savvy like others in this portal. As I said , I can rely on the mechanic I sent the vehicle for the radiator, since this happened the day after I picked my vehicle.
He is saying to me that most likely is the alternator.... but is relatively new. Should I say what you explain in your answer? I do not know if can take it well coming back with this scenario. Just tell me what would you do in a situation like this yourself, if you can.
Thank you,
Wolfang

Usually that light indicates that the battery is not being charged, therefore I would initially agree with the mechanic's kneejerk reaction assuming it is the alternator. But it could also be the connections between the alternator and the battery. I'd have to look at the car myself before continuing to make guesses. If it was my car I'd do the work myself - check connections and voltage. Probably replace the alternator or the wiring to it, and follow up with a new battery (you said yours was 4 years old).
But as you've said you're not savvy, I would recommend leaving it with your mechanic, or bringing it to the dealer. My dealership rate is $175/hour; if you really want to go cheap, you can try to bring your car to either a European specialty shop or if you're feeling lucky you can bring it to a Firestone or a Goodyear. Last time I worked at Firestone their labor rate was $120/hour. Ask for an electrical check and describe your issue and the battery light on the dash. I'm almost certain that they will immediately say it's the alternator, but they always do electrical checks before doing any other work. Electrical check consists of a battery test, starter test, and alternator test. Good luck to you.
