What Oil
Mobil 1 0W-40 in all my vehicles and I change it at 5k mile intervals along with the filter. Before the 0W-40 came onto the scene I was using Mobil 1 15W-50.

Here's a link to the Mercedes approved oils, notice Mobil 1 0W-40 is one of the few 229.5 oils that are readily available here in the states.

229.5 is a Mercedes oil specification number. It has nothing to do with chassis numbers. The synthetic vs. regular oil debate rages on in most forums with both sides thinking their oil is the best. As long as you use change the oil on a frequent basis (3 to 5k miles) you could really use any brand of SL rated oil you want. Just make sure the viscosity isn't too high for your climate conditions. I use synthetics in everything, engine, tranny, rear-end, etc. etc. because I run the hell out of my cars and want the extra protection that a sythetic offers. By the way your 98 C230 has Mercedes synthetic oil in the tranny from the factory.

Amsoil is another excellent oil that I've used in the past. Their 10W-30 is hard to beat.

Try out this website if your interested in doing an oil sample. An oil sample will tell the whole truth as to how your oil and engine is doing.

Have you ever done an oil sample on the redline your running? Redline doesn't typically do to well when it comes to iron ppm (parts per million), it's usually quite high......

My MB : Mobil 1, as specified in the manual (0-30 i guess), every 8-10k miles (when the display reads 1500 miles for next oil change). There's a lot of comparable quality material in the thread, and I feel bad I change it less often than the rest!.

SUV andhobby : Quaker State 10w-40 + 1 can stp every 3500 miles, but these are not-so-technically-advanced engines (heck! an allsteel1967 454 V8 with twin 4barrel carbs with screw adjustmentsand no computer!, it can be fixed with duck tape, a screwdriver, a 1/2 in hex key and the pump will not move the oil!)
