Default troubleshooting code P0700

My 1998 C230 shows a 'troubleshooting P0700 code', which states that "the PCM has received a signal to turn on the 'Malfunction Indicator Lamp' from the transmission control system". What does this mean ? How do I fix the problem ? Currently, my check engine light is on.

No answers as yet. Is this a difficult question or problem to resolve ? Or, maybe only the dealer can answer this question.

that depends on where the fault code was extracted.

if from the transmission, then please tell us the fault code description.

it's a transmission malfunction, so some basic check is needed using the same computer for diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply Sleepwalker.

Here is the answer to your question. The fault code description is: "the PCM has received a signal to turn on the 'Malfunction Indicator Lamp' from the transmission control system". This was the description given by the OBDC scan tool. I had the diagnostic performed at a Auto Zone parts store. They connected the tool to a wire under the steering wheel inside the car. They did not connect to any wires from the transmission.

By the way, what is the "PCM" ?
