Default 1999 ML430 P0700 Code Electric Shift Module

Hello everyone. I've got a 1999 ML430 and i am beginining to have problems with the SUV not shifting into higher gear. I got the codes ran and it read P0700. So i called the local dealer and they said it was a faulty Power Shifter Assembly / Electric Shift Module. After hearing the price of $430 for the part... i began looking online for it. The guy at the dealer said it was fairly simple to replace, that I could do it. The part is under the console, and it sends a signal to the transmission computer to change gears. Has anyone else had this problem with thier car? Where is a good place to get ML parts online, so far from what I have seen, i have been uncessessful finding this part. Can anyone shed some light on my problem. Thanks a bunch!

I have the exact same problem and they told me exactly the same thing.
If you don't care about using a used part, you can find it onlineat a junkyard for next to nothing.
But you are going to need the part # off the part itselfbecause evidentally there are 2 or 3 makes for this year concerning that part.
Long story short, mine did that on and off for about 3 months, then it stopped after we always waited for the tranny to warm up and the RPMs to drop below 1000 before putting it into gear and moving. If it is only an intermitten problem try this.
If it is happening all the time, take off the console, find the part # andbuy it used cheap! I know I am when mine decides to die.
Good Luck!

Default 2000 ML 430 Shift Module Replacement

I have just replaced the shift module in my 2000 ML 430. I haven't put the console back together, but on a test drive the following occurred (or didn't occur): I still need to put a pen in the shifter to get out of park. The transmission won't shift when driving.

Do I need to have the console back together to make this work? (That doesn't make sense)

Are there codes that need to be set and/or reset?
