My mechanic recently recommended a replacement steering damper for my 1997 C230, since I have already spent a lot of money with him this week, wanted to know if this is something I can do myself vs. the shop. I have found the part on line for like $23 and if I bring the car back to the shop again, my wife will not be pleased.

Please help with any diagrams or hints, is this something I can get at from under the hood or do I have to climb under the car?

yea should be able to change yourself.
it is under the car and you will need to take the under engine cover off and you will see it towards the back of the engine. held on by a bolt at each end. well this is how it is on my c280 anyway
