Default Starting Problems C280

Hello all, I have a C280 1998. I bought car in Dec 2004 and what a ride so far. Replaced water pump, then was having same problme as now...and replaced the start module or so I think that is what it is called. Now I have just got the car back from a transmission replacement.

Currently when I turn the key I hear either a hum or clicking almost like a bad starter type sound. Sometimes the car starts and then sometimes it does not. Been towed to mechanic about 4 times already...and could sure use some serious help. If anyone has any ideas I would sure appreciate them Thank you for you time.

If it is the V6, which judging by the year, it should be, Try lubricating the ring gear with a light smear of grease. Sometimes the pinnion gear on the starter jams as it engages. There is a special grease for this job, which is silver in color, but also, don't over do it as you may end up with grease on your crank sensor

Hi, tyvm but do not think it is the grease.....already replaced one relay. Today when I got in put key in...and just clicked..then after about 15 seconds it started. Does that sound like grease on the starter??????

If sao that would be easy fix. But not optomistic...car since december 04 car has made me crazy. But I love it so want to get it all fixed. TYVM

Yes it does sound like the ringear needs lubricating. The proper grease is "Optimal paste TA" (08452-215) It is very expensive grease though.

The Starter is pretty easy to get out, just make sure you disconnect the battery of course.

I have had the same problem with my C280. I turn the key and nothing - it just makes a clicking sound. Normally all I have to do is turn the key back to the starting position and remove it. I then put the key back in and she normally fires right up. My dealer said that the issue has to do with the nature of the key. The key is an electrical key and he says that sometimes the "relay" in the key or the sensor in the dash don't register. I'm not very mechnically inclined, so I may have not described this real well. My dealer says sometimes all that's need is a new key; however, a new key will run approximtely $150.

Ok all here is the update. New starter installed along with a newutral safety switch above the transmission. Picked up car yesterday and this morning nothing again. No sound no noise. Turn key and nothing.

Is it possible the alarm system has something to do here , just a thought. Thanks.
