My C180 is 6 years old at 170000km.
Over the past few months a warning appeared on my display (Engine symbol). Vehicle was taken back to the service centre and I was told that it was nothing to worry about!
Less than two months ago I had a scheduled service. Few days later the same wrning symbol was generated. Had the vehicle re checked and a fault was noted by the workshop which indicated that an Altitude sensor related to the fuel injection system was faulty but NOT TO WORRY about it as minor problem.
Few days later the engine stated "Hunting" ie after start in the morning the engine would have a slightly erratic idle which became normal after a minute or so.
Service centre was called and advice was that it was not serious but we could check it in for a diagnosis. The vehicle was booked in for a check a week later as no appointments earlier available.
The next day my wife starts the vehicle, followed by rough idle and sounds like a tractor!
Service centre contacted, vehicle towed away - diagnosis...
Timing belt has slipped a couple of teeth .. damage...
Valves damaged, major repairs required to engine. Photos taken of the damage and sent to Merc for evaluation. Waiting!!!
Out of warrantee - this is going to cost me a lot of money!
Anyone who has had similar problems as I want to know if this is a common problem as I am not sure whether to own another Merc.

I am pleased to report that the Merc agency has in fact blown me away with their help.
They have really been forthcoming.
Interesting to note that there is in fact no warning light to indicate excessive belt/chain play which caused the problem.
Happy again..
