it happened 6 months ago and stopped using it since...now I want to fix the problem.... specific suggestions anyone??

when I turn it on, the dash doesn't even tell Me it's on P ( parking ) anymore... It drives...but only on 1 gear.... repair shop suggeseted new shifting device for $550 plus $200 installation...is that about right??
