Default Please help!! "leather protection"

Hey guys!

My grandfather owns a Mercedes c280 2008 model. It has tanned leather seats... My grandfather uses towels on the seats to "protect" the leather against "dirty bums" and ultraviolet light. We have been trying to convince him that the towels are not necessary and that they damage the leather -- the leather in his seats feels very rough and dry!! Plus they are a big eye sore So will the towels do damage or is my grandfather correct in putting them on the seats???! What other alternatives besides towels could he use to ease his mind about protecting the leather?
Thanks

Buy him a set of good quality seat covers. But the more important question, as you noted, is why bother? Leather will stay sharp looking for years with or without some sort of cover. Assuming he doesn't put towels on the seat backs, ultimately the seats will end up two colours which makes no sense to me.
Buy a good quality leather cleaner and conditioner.
My 10 year old C230 coupe seats are in as-new condition despite the car never being garaged or covered.

That's what I I've told him! - to buy some good leather cleaner and conditioner ! But he doesn't want to risk putting chemicals on the leather....-_- but now I have some evidence. Anyways his leather definitely feels like sand paper compared to the leather in our car. Different car makes use different leathers I undersand but my grandpas just feels really bad, most likely do to the towels and lack of conditioner/cleaner. So any other ways/evidence/explanations to pursued him not to use towels and to use conditioner? Btw thanks for the comment gilgorm

Thanks

Remove the towels, add Lexol and put the towels back on if you like. Sounds like the oils have evaporated from the leather.
