My 99 280 used to give a very pleasant shut down sound when I turn off the engine. It sounded like a 737 with CFM-56 engines comes to a complete stop at the gate....and the captain turns the engines off. A slight whisper sound that dies off slowly.

Umm....after the dealer replaced the harmonic balancer for free due to "the campaign", I lost that pleasant whisper-down sound from the engine compartment. No performance difference. But, heck...I miss that nice sound.

 

Did you ask the service department you want your noise back?

 

That pleasant noise as you call it, was probably from the a bad harmonic balancer and you should be glad it is gone. I hav my new balancer installed under the recall about 6 weeks ago, the car never ran better and is quieter then before. So I would say, forget the noise the engine was suppose to do that. Do you know what the balancer does? The name Harmonic Balancer says it all.

 

Get a sea shell and hold it up to your ear. The sound of the sea is calming.

 

I know the sound u mean my Isuzu makes that sound though not my 560.

 

My 737 with CFM-56 engines makes that sound. Love it.
