Default Opinions on used C230

Hello,

I am looking to buy 2000 C230 Kompressor. The car has slightly more than 60,000 miles (~106,000kms) on it. I am in Ontario, Canada and the car was sold and has always been registered in Ontario, and it's cold here in the Winter and we get a lot of snow (read: salt and possible rust).

1. Non-MB dealer says he has all service records. What service maintanance should have been done at 60,000 miles? And what should have been changed 1) recently and 2) by now.

2. The chassis is 202. Did the have both 202 and 203 chassis at the same year?

3. Any particular problems with this model I should be concerned about? I know that any used car will need repairs, but would like to know how reliable this particular model is.

Carfax is clean (which doesn't mean much, but is good for determining the cars that are not worth the time to look at). I will be taking the car to my tech for a PPI (pre-purchase inspection).

4. I am also looking at 1998 and 1999 C230s. They have ~100,000 miles. So, the same question as 1): what service maintanance should have been done at 100,000 miles? And what should have been changed 1) recently and 2) by now.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

MB recommends, at least for my '05, that you replace fuel filter by 60K, spark plugs by 100K, etc. A lot of people, such as myself, think it's wise to flush brake fluid (look at the color of it in the little reservoir), flush coolant (be careful here....it's a pale yellow coolant available at MB dealers or your local parts store under the name ZEREX G-05, change transmission fluid and filter if it's an automatic even though some believe it's "lifetime" (don't believe that one)and whatever else you can think of. The one good thing is the shop has all the maintenance records for you and knows what has been done. These cars may or may not be reliable to a given mileage. Mine has had problems but has at least for now tapered off at 121,000 miles. I guess I shouldn't have said that too loudly! Good luck.
