Default Internal Air system stuck

Hello Guys,

my name is Riccardo and I have read this forum since a long time....even if i a read-only mode :-)

I hope you can help me troubleshooting my problem....

yesterday I noticed that my c220cdi w203, started to make a weird noise (kinda like a clank-clank-clank) coming from the central dash-board, internally, almost behind the Comand radio-gps system

It does it every time I turn ON the car, and the "clank" happens every 5-10 seconds for about 4-5 times, and then it stops.

It sounds like a mechanical skip noise...

Hope I explained myself clear.... sorry but I am italian.

I believe as a consequence of this sound, I noticed that the direction air system (up - front - down - up&down) it is not working properly anymore.

In particular, these are some tests I did:

With engine OFF - A/C OFF - Fan @ Max:
- In UP Direction: air blows ONLY from DOWN
- In DOWN Direction: air blows ONLY DOWN
- In FRONT Direction: air blows DOWN+FRONT

With engine ON - A/C ON - Fan @ Max:
- In UP Position: air blows ONLY from UP+DOWN
- In DOWN Position: air blows ONLY DOWN
- In FRONT Position: air blows DOWN+FRONT

I ask for your help especially to decide if it is something I can try to fix by myself ot it needs to go to an official MB center....and get killed from them.

Guys I really need your help......

Any idea ???

Thanks in advance
Riccardo

My wife's car has this exact problem. It seems that there's a divertor that opens to allow air to the floor and closes to force it up into the defrost or vents. I couldn't figure out how to get to whatever controls this and was hoping someone would chime in here.

I imagine that the whole dash will have to come out. If it does it's probably not going to be fixed.

Riccardo,

Here's an answer from someone in the know:

The problem with the flaps is caused most likely by the broken linkage between the flap and the actuator motor. If you remove the cover above the driver's feet and look to the heater housing, you will see the motor. Remove it to check the linkage.
After replacement, the motor end positions must be retaught with the Star Diagnosis computer to finish the job properly.
