Default Crank Position Sensor Failing

Hi -

I have a 2001 Mercedes C320. I believe that the Crank Position Sensor is failing and needs to be replaced. The car is stalling when the engine is warm/hot. It will start fine when it is cold or for the first time each day. But after that, it will stall when driving or stopping (happened both times). After it stalls it will sound like it is going to start but it wont.

I've read on here that it can be a sign of the CPS failing.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to have this fixed either at an independent shop or at the dealership? My car is not under any warranty so it comes out of my pocket. Does anyone have an estimate of parts & labor? I live in Massachusetts (Boston area).

Thanks very much for your help.

You say you "believe" it's the CPS. I would scan the car first to determine what codes come up before you go any further. Your local auto parts shop person will come out to your car and scan it for no charge. The code should tell you what's going on to be sure. Then shop around for a competent independent shop to do it. The dealership is often the most $$$, but it depends. This shouldn't be a huge job. Good luck.
