Default Cassette Storage Bins

I have the nifty cassette holders in my C280. As I do not have any cassettes, nor a method of recording any, this is just wasted space. What can be done in this area? I've looked around for some sort of aftermarket storage bin or something to no avail. What have folks done with these useless little trays?

There is a tray available from the dealer. Here's a picture of mine:
I believe the part number is 202 683 00 91. I paid around $15 from the dealership for mine.

You can probably even sell your Cassette holder on eBay. I got $30 for mine!

Thanks! I'll check that out. I'm going to be taking mine into a dealer and have it checked out. I'll ask about that.

Well, according to the dealer the tray does not fit in the 1998 model year. Guess I'm stuck with the spiffy cassette bins unless there is some other solution out there.

Hook, I just removed my cassette holders and used the current "pocket" to hold my Sirius radio. You have to remove the ashtray and cassette holder (4 screws). Once out, the cassette holders are held in place with a couple of plastic tabs that latch into the holder (similar to the way stereos are held in place in the sleave of the dash on a lot of models).

I slid a butter knife around them to release the clips and the cassette holders slide out of the housing through the front. It's really not hard to do. The problem is you have a hole left in the dash. To resolve this, I doubled up some black felt and hot glued it around the back side of the opening. It's secure and nothing falls back into the dash. This was also a good place for me to mount my Sirus radio and gave plenty of access to run the wires.

Maybe my pics will explain better. If you want to try it, I can send instructions on removing the ashtray and holder.

Arkansas, thanks for the input. I'll have to take that into consideration (and see if the wife goes for it). The official tray looks a bit cleaner, but your solution does add some functionality. Thanks again!

Arkansascarnut,
Not sure if you're still around as your post is from May, 2006, but here goes. I'm trying to do the same thing you talk about in my C280. The empty bin part number that I just got today from a MB dealer is 202 683 0491. I've gotten the silly little 6 cassette drawers out, butI still need to get the entire housing out so I can install the empy bin. Also, I can't get the ash tray out either. If you have a minute, can you send me those instructions on removing the ash tray and holder that you mention? Thanks!

Dan S.
