I still cannot believe that there is no other options out there for MB's..
this is a MB weak spot for MB owners.

I just had a CD player installed in my 2000 C230. It has the fiber optic hookups for the changer in the trunk, but it was too expensive to buy the changer and install it ... so I went another route. I decided to install my old Alpine unit and remove the factory unit. I took it to a car audio shop here in FL. (I did shop it around and found out that both Best Buy and Circuit City cannot install it because they don't carry Mercedes parts, wires etc. You probably need a wiring harness in order to connect properly.) At the shop, I was also informed that if you have a Bose system, you may not be able to make the switch.. Fortunately for me I had just stock components. So they were able to switch the units (for only $85) and my new unit works perfectly. So, yes there is an alternative out there, you just have to call around and know what to ask for.

I just went thru this with my 02 c230.
I bought a 6 disc mb cd changer (ebay) $300.00 with mounts.
Had the dealer install the unit with a fibre optics cable $30.00
installation in glove box $220.00
volume and disc change work thru steering wheel,

2 solutions... btw... I am looking to buy a C230 2002 really soon and it comes w/o CD changer... ANyways... best option (if you want to get an antique CD Changer, meaning that it may no read MP3 or CD-R's) you can get a really "inexpensive" one on ebay... 200 ish... my solution will be to get the best MP3 player or XM radio and broadcast it to the radio, true, not the best quality (btw, if you go by this method use higher frequencies like 107.9 or something) but is the least invasive and you still will be able to control the volume from the steering wheel. Not sure if you can use the AUX or if there is any available to avoid the use of the FM transmitter....
