C280 Power Steering Whine
The power steering on my 1997 C280 (112K Miles) makes a whining/humming noise when I turn all the way to the left or right at about 20-30 MPH- There is no sound unless it is a sharp turn requiring the steering wheel to be fully turned. Otherwise, it is fine on straight drives and light turns.
I am thinking it has something to do with the Power Steering Pump- If anyone had this problem and could shed some light on solutions, that would be great.
Thanks

Most if not all fluid power assisted steering will make this nose when pulled against the lock-stops, just ease the weight off on the steering wheel and it will stop. If you persist in pulling hard against the lock-stops you may eventually do damage.
Hope this helps,

Thanks, Boogaboo and Monoped for your inputs. The reason I was concerned is because this noise was not there until about an year ago- I was worried the pump is on its way out!
Monoped, I'll wait to hear what your mechanic says. Thank you.

I was experiencing whining from the power steering of my C32 AMG. I tolerated it for several months until I searched the forums about the problem. I checked the power steering fluid in the reservoir and found that it was very low. Deciding on the power steering fluid was the next challenge, since I did not want to depend on getting MB power steering fluid from the dealer. I read on the Lucas Oil website that someone tried the Lucas Oil Power Steering Stop Leak on an SLK320 and was happy with it. I picked up a bottle from Pep Boys and poured it into the reservoir to the max level. The whining went away. The power steering now feels smooth. Hopefully, the stop leak fluid will fix any leak that is probably there.
