I have a 1997 C230 with 65K miles. When I get up to about 65 mph on the highway I get noticeable humming noise for about the next 3-5 mph. There is no vibration, just the noise. Took to dealer and they said everything checked out, have had new tires put on and balanced. They did trim some insulation from around the drive shaft that helped a little but I don't think that's it. Is is a wheel bearing that they did not want to replace? Help.

 

wasn't it the tire noise? check the tire for uneven flat spots.

C230 rarely get bearing noise not unless you got minor accident.

 

I am the 2nd owner of the car which was purchased as a Starmark used. The tires are brand new and the noise occured with the old set as well as the new set of tires, is there anything else I should or should have checked? Thanks

 

find an expert ear to evaluate the noise. only by hearing it that you can know.

 

I suggest you to get a Factory Mercedes Manual.

It has all service and maintenance instructions, step by step.
