Default Burning oil comment

This is amazing my C280 now has 170,000 miles on it without any real trouble, knock on wood, however, it is now burning about a quart of oil every four thousand miles. Well, I called my local benz doctor and he said don't worry about it. It's very common, and if it was under 150,000 Mercedes would fix it for free, but it's not worth fixing and won't hurt anything. Just wondered if anyone else had heard anything about this. I appreciate your comments.
Thanks,
FA

Most manufacturers don't care if your car burns a quart every 1K miles when it's brand new.

Really, how have I missed out on this car fact? I have had always had Chevy trucks, and the old 350's never burned oil like that, and I had one with 200,000 miles on it. It burned about a half a quart every 3000 miles. I am glad to hear you say that though. Guess I will just have to keep an eye on it.
Thanks,

Most engines don't use a quart every 1K miles, thankfully. If you checked a GM factory service manual for your truck it will probably say it's okay. I have two GM manuals that say exactly that, and one is for the newer LS1 engines.

I don't agree with the tolerance. It's a bit ridiculous, but it saves the manufacturer a ton of money in repair costs. It comes down to being your responsibility for keeping oil in the engine and relieving the manufacturer of any liability. In other words, the whole thing sucks.
