Default Adjusting screws on ac compressor

Ok. I've logged on. I replied to a few posts. Feeling like maybe I've added some knowledge to the consciousness of the forums. But now...What about Me? I've got issues too.

I am considering replacing the ac compressor on my 94 c280. It leaks and makes a slight roaring sound. In looking at it (That's right I've taken it off and put it back on) I see two brass colored adjusting screw heads about 1/2" in diameter. It's possible to turn them with a large common point screwdriver, But what do they do? I've read about "variable displacement compressors." Is that what these screw-heads control.

So if I take a dive and replace the compressor with a rebuilt one, how do I know these adjusting screws will be set correctly on the new compressor?

Did I mention we had a very hot summer in texas?

Best picture I could find on ebay is attached. Unfortunately it doesn't show the slot heads. They're on the other side/bottom near the back. No easy way to get a picture of mine unless I put the car up on a lift.
