280c (w114)-what to look out for
i am considering a 1973 280c.The car has 2 known holes in the floor. One is to the left and back of the brake pedal about 6-8 inches long and 2 inches wide. The other is behind the passanger seat, and is about 10 inches wide and 6 inches long. i know floorpans are hard to find and alot of money, so i plan on making my own and having welded in (about a 250-300 dollar job). The trunk is wet and slightly soft but saveable. i also know about the notorious w114-w115 firewall rust, but i am not sure if it is rusted on this car. The interior is very close to mint, besides having to replace the carpet after gutting to weld the 2 holes. I have driven the car and it runs good for its age. It is a real looker, but has some rust forming along the bottom of the rear quarter panel, is not that bad but still there. i also know about the rust that forms on most w114-w115's in the vent below the windsheild wipers. i love the car, but do not want to dig myself into a money pit. once the floor was patched i would really just try to find the source of the water coming into the trunk and either reseal (250-300 dollars) or silicon. But i can tell once the rust is corrected this will be a really sweet ride. i got the guy who currently owns the car down to 1250 dollars, but would be more comfortable at 1000 dollars so i could have the floor corrected immediately after i bought the car. anyone who knows any good parts sources or a good source of information can email me at lildrummaboy@ymail.com. i am on a budget, as i am just a teen planning on pouring every penny ive got into the car. any help making this decision would be greatly appreciated.
Well i bought the car! i enjoyed it for 1 day and now the restoration begins. so far i have scrubbed out and undercoated the trunk and gutted the interior, plus got a head start on the majo rust spot. now for the welding and riviting!
