Default 2008 c220 auto gear box

My 08 plate c220cdi c-class is stuck in limp mode. A garage has told me it needs a full rebuild at the price off £1800. The car has 86k on the clock and is a family car which hasn't been driven hard. Is this a common problem? I'm in Newcastle if anybody would know any good garages. Thanks in advance.

Hello from Canada, I have never been to New Castle, however I have learned a thing or two in 45 years of maintenance. I do mechanical inspections for a living #1 Transmission limp mode failure needs to be looked at by a competent mechanic that specialises in automatic transmissions. Standard analytical troubleshooting techniques should be followed. The first question the mechanic should ask, is this from you the customer. Did they ask you how the automobile and transmission was operating prior to the shutdown? Did they ask regarding any previous unusual symptoms. Did they explain to you how they came to their conclusion? Did they show you the OBD 2 code readings and explain them to you? Did they check the fluid level, the solenoids, the shift linkage, the throttle downshift linkage , the fuse and other things ?
Do not be afraid to ask the mechanic where the apprenticeship was served and is the mechanic's certification current on Mercedes automatic transmissions. Then before spending anywhere near that amount make an appointment with a Mercedes factory certified technician. The first mechanic may be correct with the diagnosis, however I advise that you have at least one independent second opinion by a competent licenced and certified mechanic Allan
