Back in the shop today, will know tomorrow if this fix works.

I hope so because I drove the car I gave my daughter a few years ago and it was so smooth it felt like a what a Mercedes should ride like...it was my old 1993 Dodge Intrepid...@ 125000 miles it still gets 21 mpg in town.

New drive shaft fixed most of the problem. The rubber joints are the cause. Alignment of the shaft to third member critical to cure vibration problems. Biggest help is not to park on a hill overnight. All the rubber crap takes a set and throws the driveshaft alignment off. The root cause is the combination of motor mounts, transmission mount, driveshaft flex couplings and rubber mounts in the rear end. This car will never be right. This is my last Benz.

Thanks! I have the same problem. Your explanation makes sense. It also explains why when I have driven other c280 4matics the level of rumbling varies substantially. The dealer says the 4matic drivetrain is noisy.

Hi, I'm new to this site and wonder if anyone can help me?
I have just bought a Mercedes C180 Estate 1997. At 45mph a vibration sets in which comes up through the seat. It feels like is is coming from the rear or some where on the drive train. We have replaced the prop shaft centre bearing and cheched the rubber discs on the ends of the prop shaft. We have also tried a different set of wheels and tyres all round. The last thing we have tried is new rear shock absorbers. Still the vibration is there. It makes driving the car uncomfortable and shakes all within it. There is a very small amount of up and down play in the drive shaft where it joins the diff.
Has anyone else ever had this kind of problem, or can anyone give me advise as what to try next?
Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi

I have 2003 C230 coupe with the same problem. Very frustrating and dealership never found it. Please reply with whether the d-shaft turned out to be your problem. I suspect my roar is a combination of tires, suspension, and maybe even the plastic under panels sending out sympathetic vibrations. Mine starts at around 43 and is still audible at 65+,although not a pronounced.

Mine goes away, or at least is reduced, after a car-wash. What about yours?

Hey Beltfedbob

I am a little embarassed to see I posted the same info in this string twice.GuessI missed page 1! Duh...[8D]

Anyway - can I ask a few questions?
Where did you have the d-shaft replaced...dealer or MB mechanic?
Was it new MB part or rebuilt?
Is the problem still fixed?
What tire are you running on your C230?

Thanks sir!!

Default Been a long time!

The drive shaft fixed the problem for me along with a rebalance of the tires.
I'm running General UHP's on sport wheels.
Not a daily driver anymore, getting it fixed up to give the youngest when she graduates from College again.

Now I have a CLK with the same vibration problem!

Default C280 4 Matic vibration/2006/34000 Miles

I experience slight vibration driving straight over 45, and a loud harsh vibration when turning front wheels (thik it's coming from the back end however). I Just recevied a call from my dealer, I'm told the vibration is caused by Good Year tires (how can this be) and they are also changing my transfer case fluid. They mentioned that I may even need a new transfer case! Today's service total? Over $500......
