Default Air cleaner Row air intake boxs

I have a 2011 SL 6.3 AMG Engine R156-981 Chassis R230-470
1- Why do some performance people list HP at 518 and some at 525

2- What's up with the so called air boxes (ROW) Do they really make a difference, Rather then just dropping in 2 BMC air filter panels into the stock air boxes and removing the charcoal filter. Or any other high flow filters.
I'm so waiting for these answers.
Thank you
Bill

Hello Bill and welcome to the forum!

1. You won't feel a difference between 518 and 525, MB lists it as 518.
2. The big difference between an aftermarket intake and just having an upgraded filter has to do with the piping. If you just drop in a BMC or K&N filter, it'll improve the "breathing" but the stock box is still using the car's stock piping to get the air in. If you switch over to an aftermarket cold air intake system, depending on the kit - the piping can be routed to a bigger opening which will allow more fresh air to get into the system; thus increasing power.

Hope this makes sense. Let us know if you have any other questions or if we can assist with any future part needs. Thanks.

Hi Pelican Parts. Thanks for the reply. MB has it at 518 but what is it in reality? You say you can't feel the difference of 7 HP true. But when you compare it to the 5,7or 10 supposedly HP from the ROW intake boxes, then the same applies. Unless you use a system for 2,000 dollars + I'm a firm believer in more air more fuel = more power. So if the difference is a few HP from intake kit to only filter I don't know! Not the smartest guy in the room.

1) The difference is the ratings. The 2011 engine was rated 386kw, which is 518hp (SAE), or 525ps (metric). HP and PS are not the same. More info here:
https://www.carwow.co.uk/guides/glos...-is-horsepower

2a) I don't know why Pelican was talking about an aftermarket intake, when you specifically asked about the ROW (i.e., non-USA) factory airboxes. The difference, besides the missing carbon filter, is the shape of the pipe internally. The ROW plastic snorkel inside has less restriction because it was not flattened to make room for the carbon filter. Google for photos showing each type.

2b) You'll get near zero power gain with any aftermarket filters, regardless of what anyone claims, but your wallet will be lighter. The ROW airboxes may provide a small power gain but it's likely in single digits. If you are shelling out for a "tune", the ROW airboxes won't hurt, but don't plan on any seat-of-the-pants difference either way. On the bright side, the ROW airboxes include brand new airflow sensors so on a higher-mile engine, that alone may be worth the cost.
