I'm looking to purchase a 1980s Mercedes 300D for use as an every day driver. I'm told that mid 80s were the best and then they went to aluminum heads and were not as strong. What does the community suggest for a good used Mercedes under $10,000 that is strong and will last?

Also a used car guy today told me he has a 1997 300D for sale for under $10,000 and it has fairly low mileage. I'm not a fan of the look of these but wanted everyone's opinion about the newer diesels. I have my reservations.

You likely already bought a car by now, but i've had a 1983 and a 1984 300D and enjoyed them both a great deal. Just make sure you get one that hasn't been abused. I do however concur with the other people you've spoken to and advise you get something between 1980 and 1985.
