Default temperture problem

I havent driven my 97 c280 for a few weeks and I started driving it a few days ago. Today I noticed that whenever I stopped the car at a red light, the temperture would increase from the normal operating temperture to the max of 120C. Then when I started moving again, the temperture would drop back to normal. Any ideas what the problem is?

Check the thermostat first. That's the easiest fix if that is the problem. I just change the thermostat on my 97 E320.

kyo216,
Youi didn't mention if your auxilliary fan(s) came on as the temperature rises. Easy to test in your garage or while the car is parked. If they don't, check wiring and temp switch. If aux fan is working, then I think the suggestion about the thermostat is a good one, along with having your expansion tank pressure cap checked (autozone) and replaced if necessary. Last, has the anti-freeze/coolant been changed recently? Using MB recommended?

I found out the problem is the water pump which I just replaced for $250. I also changed the thermostat and refilled the coolant which was low. Thanks for your help guys.

How difficult was it to change the water pump? Just curious in case it comes up.
