Starting issues
I have a 98 ML320. The key ignition has always made it difficult to start. Some times it takes a few turns of the key back and forth until the car will turn over and start. Just yesterday it turned over and the starter kept going without the engine turning on. The key seemed to be stuck in that extended position. It did start after a few trys. It does not seem to be a starter issue but a problem with where you put the key in on the steering. Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions? Thanks
Hi,
I suspect your ML has an auto start sequence. Once initiated by turning the key the system takes over and continues to crank (at least for a few seconds) until the engine is running.
I am not able to determine from your description whether you have a problem
1. When turning the key nothing happens or
2. The engine cranks but doesn't always start,.
1. Points to an EIS Electronic Ignition Switch issue. Many modes of failure are relatively common
2, Fuel or ignition issues are preventing the engine from firing. just a guess but likely low fuel pressure.
Please clarify issue.
likely next step either way is to see if any ciodes are set in the engine ECU. For this you will need to get the ECU scanned with a handheld scanner.
advise outcome and I will endeavour to provide more info.
