Hello

I have a 1972 Mercedes Benz 220/8. I got it as my first car. I wanted to work on it.

But now I have another car. My dad wants me to sell it. I have tried that. But now i'm thinking of keeping it. But I don't think that I can fix it without spending alot more than it's worth.

Here is the problem when it's running it smokes through the valve cover. Would this mean that I need new piston rings or just a stuck valve or what. I would like to keep it. Mercedes and Ford (that's my other car) are my favorite types of cars, and if I could get my Mercedes running good.

And if I do keep it does anyone know any good sites or places that I can get parts. I'm in Spokane WA.

All that it needs is brake work and the engine work and the brake work is easy (it has 4 wheel disk ) It's just the engine work that I might have problems with, I mean not knowing what to do.

I would like some help.

Thank you

Hello

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I just did an oil change, including oil filter.

How can I check the crankcase vent.

My dad kept telling me that it was bad rings because of the smoke coming out valve cover. It's mostly exhaust and that's what i'm woried about.

Thank you

The crankcase vent will have hoses on proubly all your hoses that are not part of the cooling system are part of the crankcase venterlation system, Heres what my manual says.."The crankcase emision control system consists of a series of hoses which connect the crankcase vent to the camshaft cover vent and air inlet, a pressure regulating valve and an oil separator unit. Check at regular intervals that the hoses are free from blockages and undamaged".

I hope that sorts it for you.

Does itidle smoothly or roughly?

Does it make any unusual noises, like sputtering, when youtake offfrom a stop?

Where EXACTLY on the valve cover is the smoke coming from?

Does the smoke come out in a steady stream or does it puff?

Does the smoke smell like burned oil?

Any oil spots on your driveway?

So it idles roughly, smokes steadilyfrom just one of the valve coverswithno smokecomingfrom the exhaust pipes? A malfunctioning valve is my guess.

Assuming you don't find any disconnected or clogged hoses mentioned by Dave, can you take that valve cover off and take a quick looksee? Check it while it's running if you don't mind making a mess.

I thought the 8 in 220/8 meant 8 cylinders. Dopey me.

Yeah, it should at least sputter with a bad valve, but you said you haven't driven it and couldn't say.

It's really easy to check the PCV valve and loose hose endsas Dave suggested. There should be a hose going into the valve cover with a small plastic and/or metalpiece between the hose endand the cover, assuming the Germans did it the American way back then. Take thepiece (PCV valve) off and shake it vigorously. There's alittle ball inside the PCV valve that controls a one-way airflow. If it does NOT rattle freely, replace it because it's clogged and the blow-by gases are being forced out through the oil filler cap instead of recirculating through the intake. The gases would also enterthe crankcase, which would result in sludge.Don't try to clean it. Replace it. It's cheap and cleaning it doesn't work.

If the PCV valve is okay, pull the valve cover. The problem may become obvious when you do, especially if it's running.
