the K38/8 is faulty or the start enable signal from the engine control unit is not present.

according to that wiring diagram, terminal 50 is the starting circuit.

out there on the road where i get these starting problems... i disable/bypass that K38/8 and drive the car in 5 minutes. that relay is behind the glove box, strapped on the strenghtening member of dashboard.

ORIGINAL: sleepwalker
the car was produced june 15, 1998 and not using eis yet.
140.033 S320L. my oh my, it is not S430 at all or else i got the wrong VIN? it got 6 cylinders! please correct me JohnG.
transmission is 722.605 so i omit the possibility of starter lock-out switch.
Good job with the VIN there my friend.

Kind of hard to troubleshoot when you have the wrong car.... LOL

So we now have a 140 Chassis and a 104 Engine, correct ?

OK I see 5 terminals on K38. When the car is in the NO START mode should I jumper terminals 3 & 2 or 3 & 1?? I think maybe 3 & 1, This appears to be the engerized mode.

Go through with what Sleepwalker has you doing as he is a sharp guy and knows these Benzzies well.

There is also an issue with the Brake Assist Control Module that can cause a no start (if your vehicle is equiped with it).

I've attached the Technical Service Bullentin (TSB) regarding this issue.

Hope it helps

I appreciate what u and Sleepwalker are doing for me. I think the idea from Sleepwalker will help me if the car is in the NO START mode. I can probably force it to start by bypassing whatever is causing the problem and that will help get the "beast" home.
However I am still struggling with the root cause of the problem?????
I am still leaning toward the anti theft only because of the manner in which the problem occurs. It happens whether or not the car is hot or cold. Doesnt matter if it was driven or not! Problem is time related. "Fixes" itself with time!! Occurs after the vehicle has been locked. This is all indicative of some sort of electrical component that is failing. An IC chip perhaps in the alarm system, A leaky capacitor??
Day two since the anti theft system was disconnected and it still starts!!

We had our ignition switch replaced for same problem. The car ran long enough for them to call us and tell us problem solved. We got to shop, ran long enough to move from one end of shop to other, would not start and entire dash panel was out. Car has been in shop now 4 1/2 weeks, we are waiting for parts.

there is a transponder around the ignition switch also on these cars on which is connected to the small module behind the instrument cluster. this transponder often cause problem too.

That was the dealers "first guess". Only relieved us of $400 and problem still exists. Dealer has no clue what to do next except randomly change parts and "hope" something works.
No a really good financial solution for me.

It appears that there are many things that can cause the "No starting" problem. I disconnected the anti theft system on our auto and so far(3 days) the vehicle has been starting OK. Our problem was associated with the locking and unlocking of the vehicle(my analysis), not heat related and very intermittent. As far as I could determine, the only thing that was activated by locking and unlocking the vehicle was the anti theft system so I pulled the fuse. If it runs(starts) for a month, I will have the anti theft module changed.
