Default Overdrive working?

I am a newbe here and a new 1999 sl 500 owner. The question I have is I am not sure the overdrive is working. What rpm should I be turning at 65 mph? Is there another way to be sure it is functioning?
Thanks for any help.

Default RE: Overdrive working?

you got no overdrive since there is a freewheeling gear inside your transmission. no ratio on 4th gear (1:1)

if you got 722.6 transmission, then it's electronically controlled. 5th comes at 1:0.83

use the manual shift to feel on which gear you are now. it won't damage anything. (for example: if you want to know if you are in 5th gear already, move the lever to "4". if you feel a sudden downshift engagement, it means that you were at 5th gear before moving that lever to "4".)
