Arrow How to make the Gear Selector safety solenoid release?

92 MB 300D 2.5 Turbo. 250K miles.

While in Neutral I had to turn the ignition OFF and when I tried to Turn it back ON I could not make the Key turn past the AUX stop. The key is stuck in Ignition Switch. I believe it is because the gear selector thinks it is in some gear and does not allow the key to rotate back or forward. I can move the Gear selector freely to any position from Park to 2 and wiggle the key but nothing happens.

Could anybody tell me how to make the gear selector safety solenoid release or provide any other advice?

Thanks.

Look at the base of the shifter and there is a small place about the size of a number two pensil,,,you can put a pensil in there and depress and it will un lock this,,,,
