If you need a status symbol then buy anything from Mercedes. If you want good fuel economy then look at a VW. I have a MB C220 diesel estate (2006 year) and its the worst car for fuel economy I have EVER owned.....EVER. Having just sold a car which actually achieved 47mpg (over a rolling 50,000 miles), to drive a car that does 30mpg around town and can sometimes achieve 40 if you drive at a mind numbingly slow 65mph is really poor....especially as they advertise the C220 diesel as being one of the most efficient mercs.
Dont believe the sales hype either, the latest MB C220 blue motion is claiming to achieve 64mpg. If you can get it to do 64mpg I will buy you one and you can keep your $15000. In my opinion the MB is relying totally on its reputation, the car is not actually that good. If MB are the creme de le creme of engineers then why are they so far behind in the efficiency game, they really are not that clever eh!
Sorry to be so negative. Then C220 diesel has been 100% reliable and is comfy and probably very safe in an accident, unfortunately is not particularly quick and is definately not efficient. Hope this helps. Gary (UK) ($160 to fill the tank once a week just to get to work....ouch)

i bought a 94 e320 for $1000 with 125xxx miles and after putting $3000 into it to fix an oil leak it runs like a champ. the mechanic who worked on it said it should be good for at least 250000 miles easy. its a very reliable car, fast, and looks great too. for about $4000 its pretty hard to beat
