Fuel Gage Jumps

Default Fuel Gage Jumps

My fuel gage jumps up and down. What is the problem and maybe a fix????

I don't know. I'm a new Benz owner and have only had this car 2 weeks. I looked for a "fuel pressure regulator" on Google for this car and didn't find one, therefore, I don't think it has one.

Ken,
My guage doe this also particularly when it's below a half a tank. It's kind of erratic. It will jump around andthen simmer down then start jumping again. I saw a diagram once that indicated some kind of butterfly mechanism within a tube that is the device that measures fuel level. I figure this mechanical thing has some gum on it and just doesn't work like it should any more. I've been using Lucas fuel treatment in the gas that seems to help. I have a 190e.

hi every one
i had the same problem with my car when i bought it 300e 1989 after i removed and cleaned the fuel sending unit it worked perfect.
as of mine the fuel sending unit located on the trunk just behined the bulk head with a big nut ,removed it and spray with carbeuator cleaner be carfull the wires are very small.

Mine is a 190 D. I'm going to give the sending unit a good cleaning and see what happens. Thanks everyone!

problem with the fuel sender.

probabaly dirty on an aolder car,

usually a few tankfulls of good quality fuel will solve the problem

otherwise take out and clean

Hey there,
I just wanted to report that my gauge has not jumped for the last two tankfills of gas. I have a 1986 190e and I have used the Lucas gas treatment in my tank for the previous three tankfulls. I believe the gas treatment cured the jumping fuel gauge.
