FSS benefits?
2000 E320
What are the benefits of the flexible service system in my car? Obviously it acts similar to an oil change sticker. I thought the FSS in this car actually measured the remaining life in the oil and based on the conditions recommended when to service the car. I don't think this is the case because last time I changed the oil I didn't reset the FSS and the mileage just kept winding down as if the oil change hadn't been done.
Going off topic here, I check the oil level every few weeks and it always measures full. I never have to add any oil. I use 0w-40 Mobil 1 synthetic. Anyone have to add oil regularly?

RE: FSS benefits?
Hi,
FSS monitors the way the vehicle is used using some of the parameters implicit in the engine management system.
If you use the car very infrequently (like you have several other cars) the "Spanner(s) Service Required" logo comes up driven predominately by Time. If the vehicle is used for high speed / high miles the Service Required warning is driven predominately by Miles travelled.
Not sure exactly what algorythm is used but it also differentiates between A and B type service schedules.
Some of the components on the car degrade with Mileage (e.g. oil condition) whilst others degrade over Time (e.g. wiper blades / seat belt anchorages).
Its basically an idiot system.
If the FSS system was not reset at the last oil change and is still counting down (i.e. service not yet required) you have to ask whether you are changing the oil needlessly especially since you are using Mobil 1 which is designed to permit extended service intervals.
Mobil 1 is £10 per litre (Retail) here in the UK and my SLK 320 takes about 10 litres at a change. Yes an oil/filer change at a main dealer is circa £130!! I assume that Mobil 1 must be a lot cheaper in the USA.
Hope this helps.

RE: FSS benefits?
10 GBP/litre is what my MB dealer charges for an oil change using Mobil 1 (plus an additional £40 for the filter and labour)
I actually get it from a dealer on eBay who ships it in from the US at £4.50 / litre. Retail price in a car shop (Demon Tweaks) is £38 for a 4 litre plastic can!
Gas at 32p / litre. You guys don't know you are born!!
Best price over here (Tesco supermarket) 84p / litre (95 RON). Motorway Service stations are currently charging about 93p/litre and a few weeks ago the headline price hit 105p / litre. Super (97 RON is about 3p / litre more expensive. Likewise Diesel is currently about 6p MORE expensive than petroleum entirely due to TAX.
