Default front suspension question

I have a 1981 240D and I need to replace the lower control arm bushings. I'm wondering if I can replace the bushings without removing the lca assembly from the car. The ball joints are OK and I recently replaced the upper control arms. Can I just disconnect the shocks and the bushings and lower the lca enough to replace the bushings? Also I have conflicting info as to whether I need a spring compressor a knowledgeable friend says you only need the compressor on cars with Mc Pherson struts. I also wonder how to test the mounts on the struts that go between the lca and car body. Thanks for your advice.
