I have a 93 MB 400SEL, it is occasionally losing oil pressure. It wont lose pressure when at idle, however it will occasionally when driving. It has great power and acceleration and idles perfect. The Mercedes shop says I need a new engine, but this seems strange to me. When I lose pressure my temp. doesn't go up, but I know I lose pressure because the lifters become loud. Any ideas?

 

Did the shop say why you need a new engine? how many miles on it. Try a higher vicosity oil an see what happens with the pressure?

 

Hello, yes the shop reports that it needs a new engine. They did not give me much explanation. The engine has 115K miles on it. I will definately try the higher vicosity oil.

Personally, I woudl have them tell you exactly why you need a new engine, 114K miles is not that bad for a Mercedes, unless it was never service correctly or when sevice was needed. I'd get a second opinion. Cars and medicine are akin in ways, always get a second opinion, you could save a bundle of $$

 

I agree, I will probably get another opinion. I own many mercedes and the are all serviced on schedule. Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
