[]Electronic key will not turn in the ignition

I have a 2001 E200 Kompressor Estate. For some unknown reason the electronic key will not turn in the ignition. The key stopped working suddenly-no warning. The key enters the receiver fully and appears to be reading the signal from key. I have tried the spare key also but no joy . I also put a booster on the car battery just in case but still nothing. I have checked all fuses but I don't know much about the electrics, ECU etc.,. I'd be grateful for any thoughts, ideas or preferably a solution. Please reply - Stranded.

I think this is a dealer issue, If only one failed it could be a defective key, but both means it is a problem with the key collor or electronics. The locks are powered by the battery in the remote , the ignition key gets its energy from the key collar, and submits data to the drive authorization computer which unlocks the wheel and starts the car.

NOT TRUE!!! The battery in your remote is ONLY design for your keyless entry, and not your DAS Key System. Your car has an EIS (Electronic Ignition Sytem), which uses RF frequency which is embedded in your remote transmitter. This RF Frequency sends out signal to your ME-SFI (Engine Control Module), and uses those codes to fire up your injectors. YOU DON'T NEED A BATTERY ON YOUR REMOTE TO START YOUR CAR...the battery in your remote is only design for you keyless entry!!!!!!!! Your problem is 99% EIS!!!

Yeah, you appear to be right. Garage called me on Friday last (7 Mar 08) and said it was the ignition switch.......... Need to replace switch, codes and keys. €1,100... Gutted! Thanks for all replies. Good luck to all with your motors! Happy St. Patrick's Day!! Slán Leat agus go raibh maith agut!
