Default 2001 c320 key will not turn in ignition

I have a 2001 Mercedes C320. I cannot turn the key in the ignition. I put the key in & it will not turn into any position. The doors will unlock and lock fine. When I put the key in it does not make any noise (it usually does like it is releasing the steering wheel lock). I have been trying for hours to get it work by wiggling the steering wheel while trying to turn the key. I finally had to have the car towed to my house. I only have this one key and I just had a new ignition switch put in 3 months ago. Could it be a faulty key? Is there anyway to reset the key or is it just dead? If a new key (or ignition is needed) can anyone estimate the costs? I bought this car 3 years ago from a used car dealership so there is no warranty. I believe that this could be the original key. Thanks everyone.

Chances are that it is a faulty key. Unfortunately, mercedes implemented a theft relevant part requirement which requires that they program the key and you have to provide license, registration and sign some documents. At my dealership, it ends up costing about $400 for a key now but that is the best place to start. Try holding the unlock button while trying to turn the key, sometimes this works.
