I am having this same problem fixed today. I have a '99 E320 Wagon with 80k milesthat was doing exactly what you're describing. On Saturday it wouldn't start for me on a handful of tries, then after waiting a few minutes, it started. It did the same thing yesterday. The mechanic ran the diagnostic which didn't reveal the problem, but stated that his experience has shown it's a sensor that is located at the back of the engine. Sorry, can't recall the specific name of thesensor, but will re-post with that infoafter I pick up the car.

Hi,
Crank but no start is often the CPS Crank Position Sensor on the bell housing.

However, no crank is very different.

My first guess is the EIS Electronic Ignition Switch since your mechanic has already checked battery terminals and starter connections (which are the first thing to check...No cost!) however need to detail the symptoms a little finer.

When it doesn't start EXACTLY what does / doesn't work.Do the instrument warning lights come on as usual or not?. Any noise whatsoever (turn heater / AC OFF)

When this occurs is it at any time of the day, the first start of the day or possibly NOT the first start of the day. i.e. Warm or Cold engine.

All these details help to pinpoint the problem.

Great insight by Stuart. It was the crank sensor that was changed on mine.

Ours did not start on a warm start and the engine died while at a stop light and would not restart. Cost to replace the sensor was $268.00, parts and labor.

it's also called the Reference Sensor, located at the flywheel...

it could be any electrical/electronic prblem... the hardest part is the problem is not consistent..and it's happned out of the blue...

as for my guess.. it could be your ignition lock..(there's no contact for the starter to run, everything else is good)...

if you can check all the connection to the ignition lock... or better yet borrow a used one from your mechanic for a while...

this happened to me and I pulled my hair and finallet I found that the inigtion lock is at fault..

Hi,

As I stsated before.

No crank =
1. bad battery.....eliminated
2. Bad starter solenoid.....eliminated
3. Bad EIS.........next likely suspect. Starter motor relay contacts. within the EIS. likely burnt.
