E320 Rear End Clunk

E320 Rear End Clunk
I have a 99 E320 that has some sort of problem with the rear end/transmission/drive line. When accelerating after a near stop (not stopping all of the way) the engine rpm's increase and there is (or appears to be) a delay with the engagement of the drive train. When it does catch (after only a few miliseconds) it BANGS into action. It does not do it on a consistant basis, but when it does it is a little unnerving!
Sorry in advance if this has already been addressed, but I could not find any posts concerning this issue. Any advice/information would be GREATLY appreciated.

RE: E320 Rear End Clunk
I have experienced this problem also however it is so infrequent that I have just ignored it.
Its difficult to know what is a design "characteristic" under specialised conditions and what is a real fault.
Start off by checking Auto Trans fluid level....NB You need to get your dealer to do this unless you have access to the special tool. Are there any leaks from the transmission?
If OK, and assuming it only occurs VERY infrequently, I would leave well alone until the frequency of the fault increases.....or unless you have DEEP pockets.
